You can use external growbeds outside on the flat areas or inside an alien containment unit (some plants need it to be at least double height to grow). If they grow on the surface, and can be used in your fabricator, you might need them. Just a thought that anything you might have in internal and external growbeds at your main base (and even some common plants you probably never planted) would be useful down there as well, so think about making those as well. You could also use thermal, but you would need a lot of thermal plants to power a water filtration unit. I built a nuclear reactor because there is Uranite there. When I got done and was heading back up to the surface world for the last time, I packed it up and took it with me because I needed to collect a lot of resources for the next task. It was useful having everything I needed at my disposal. Personally I left my main base where I originally built it and built a second base while I was in the Lost River. It is great to have a base down there during that time. There also comes a point where you have done everything there is to do and have to return to the surface world. There comes a point in the game where you spend a lot of time exploring the Lost River and performing additional tasks. It's great for the rest of LR, but can only get about halfway down the cove before you hit max depth. Having jets and a grappling arm makes getting around a lot easier. luckily got back into the docking bay pretty quick. I almost wrecked mine a couple times when I forgot and dropped out of the cyclops into 950m or so, lol. If you bring the prawn in the cyclops, don't release it into the cove until after you build the Mk1 depth module for it - unmodified it also maxes out at 900m.Just watch your depth until you get it (Mk1 only goes to 900m). You can make the Mk2 with the nickel you find in the cove. Have at least the Mk1 depth mod for the cyclops already built (otherwise you have to stop when you hit 500m and make one). Don't forget a bit of lithium for reinforcement (you only need like 1 for, e.g., a scanner and a moonpool). You can get most stuff down there, but it saves time if you already have it ready. Look over your blueprints for the key base components you want and throw the basic construction materials in the lockers on the cyclops. There's even table coral a 100m or so away up the lost river. And it's not like you can't bring some of that with you and start a growbed (you could even build a water filter for salt if you REALLY want to). It's a good place to build a power cell charger off that thermal plant to top up your cyclops, and a moonpool so you can pop back up and build your thermal reactor module for the prawn after you snag a little bit of kyanite in the first leg of the ILZ.Ībout the only things you can't get there are really surface-specific stuff like creepvine, acid mushrooms (lots of deepshrooms though), and salt for some reason. It's free of predators, it's right by the ILZ entrance, there're a couple good spots for a thermal plant, there's nickel in the pools and multiple large deposits of other resources around if you have a prawn with a drill.
